Repair or Replace?
Once the issue is identified, you may be left with the question of continuing to pay for repair and maintenance or replacing the system entirely. We will act on whichever works best for you. here are some thing to consider:
How much will Repair and Maintenance cost over time?
A new AC system should last between 12 -15 years without needing a lot of repair, but with some maintenance, like a car or any other machine would. The question is, will your unit require semi-frequent visits? A typical repair may cost anywhere from $300 to $600 depending on the issue. If you do that once a year for the next 10 years, you could spend between $3,000 -$6,000. If a new system costs about the same, you may consider getting a new unit.
If it simply needs a repair once in a while or a little maintenance, it would be much cheaper to just pay for the repair.
Energy Efficiency is factor:
When considering repair vs replacement, you must also factor in the efficiency of your current system. If it is a smaller, older unit, it will take more power to run it than some of the newer and stronger systems that have been produced in recent years. For instance: Many older units will cost around $1,200 in electricity use per year. Replacing it with a newer, energy efficient unit will cost you around $700 a year to power. That's about $500 a year in savings as well as having a newer unit.
If a new AC unit may cost $5,000 but your extra energy cost and repair cost of the older unit will average $1,000 a year, it would take just 5 years to break even while enjoying great quality air, no interruptions in your service and a good, energy efficient unit that would most likely continue without need of repair for the next 5 or so years.
Health Factor: The other factor to consider is if your unit is pushing mold or allergens into the space you are breathing in. You may want a newer system that is built to keep as many of those out as possible. Sometimes that requires retro fitting your duct work as well, which is another cost to consider.
No matter what path you choose, we want what works for you and your budget best. What are you waiting for? We are waiting for your call.
